Palm Beach County Mayor Gregg Weiss appointed to lead National Committee on Artificial Intelligence

National Association of Counties taps Weiss as co-chair on AI exploratory Committee

The National Association of Counties (NACo) is announcing the establishment of the AI Exploratory Committee, aimed at extensively studying the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on county governance, operations, constituent services, innovation, public trust, privacy, security and workforce productivity. NACo selected Palm Beach County Mayor Weiss to serve as one of the co-chairs to lead this endeavor.

“I’m honored and excited to serve in this capacity,” said Weiss. “Our commitment is to harness AI to drive innovation, streamline processes and improve public services across all county governments.”

In a rapidly evolving society with AI technologies developing at an unprecedented pace, it is crucial for county officials to understand and anticipate its implications. The incorporation of AI into the public sector will undoubtedly have a substantial effect on governance and service provision for the nearly 40,000 county elected officials and over 3.6 million in the county workforce.

While the emergence of AI technologies offers the potential for significant efficiencies and improvements in areas such as task automation, data analytics and constituent services, it also presents potential challenges. These include workforce disruption, community inequalities, security risks, as well as concerns related to bias, privacy and intellectual property rights.

With this in mind, NACo has called for increased exploration and discussion among county officials and partners. The AI Exploratory Committee represents a significant step towards understanding and planning for both the short-term and long-term policies, strategies and practices surrounding the safe and successful use of AI.

The AI Exploratory Committee comprises 15 county officials representing diverse county demographics and functions. Co-chaired by Judge Andy Brown (Travis County, Texas) and Commissioner Gregg Weiss (Palm Beach County, Fla.), the committee also includes representatives from state associations and affiliate partners.
