The House Criminal Justice Subcommittee held a workshop on HB 57 which would require uniformed officers assigned to patrol duties to be equipped with body cameras. HB 57 was filed by Rep. Shevrin Jones, and a companion bill, SB 248 was filed by Sen. Chris Smith. Several law enforcement agencies have initiated pilot programs which have included policies to address privacy concerns and public records issues. In addition to these concerns, the costs associated with state-wide mandated use of body cameras was also discussed during the workshop. FAC staff will continue to work closely with the Florida Sheriff’s Association on this measure.
