City Attorney’s Office


Summary:  The incumbent of this position works independently and assists the City Attorney and Deputy City Attorney in the provision of legal services to the City, including the Mayor, City Commission, City departments and all City agencies, Boards and Committees; meets all court and rule-imposed deadlines (or provides management with sufficient notice if issue); provides good legal advice and assistance to the Mayor, City Commission, City Administrator, Internal Audit, and various City departments and boards;; prepares ordinances and resolutions and prepares and reviews Commission agenda items; represents the City in assigned legal proceedings; conducts investigations of claims and complaints by or against the City; prepares reports, memoranda, and drafts legal opinions recommending courses of action; drafts pleadings and litigation documents and conducts depositions and trials; assists in the training and development regarding local government law for boards, staff, and junior attorneys; drafts and prepares bills affecting the City for the State legislature; takes initiative to develop expertise in certain areas of local government law and responsibility, while continuing to handle all matters assigned; may supervise and provide guidance to more junior attorneys and staff on specific matters; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:  Juris Doctorate and eight (8) years of progressively responsible legal experience with five (5) years of Florida local government experience is required. Direct experience shall include labor and employment administration and litigation in State and Federal courts, civil service, collective bargaining, Section 1983, American with Disabilities Act and related labor and employment areas; appeals; arbitrations, FCRA. Municipal government experience preferred, but not required.  Member of the Florida Bar in good standing is required. 

A current and valid Florida driver’s license is required.  For application purposes, a valid driver’s license from any state (equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized; with the ability to obtain the State of Florida driver’s license within thirty (30) days from date of employment.

 Compensation:  $117,302 – $175,952 (min-max)

Benefits: Health, Vision, and Dental Insurance, Basic Life Insurance, Long Term Disability Insurance, Defined Contribution Plan (401a) with employer match (6.5%); 12 holidays, accrued vacation, and sick time.  Management Category II Benefits: Four (4) Days of Management Leave per Year and additional $50,000 life insurance policy.
