Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Ranking Member Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) recently signaled their continued commitment to overhauling the federal tax code through comprehensive reform. As part of the effort, the Committee leaders announced their plans to begin a series of hearings this summer to examine several issue areas that would be part of an updated and effective tax code. A hearing on education tax incentives is slated for June. In July, hearings on modernizing corporate taxation and ID theft and taxpayer privacy protection are scheduled.
In a joint statement, Sens. Wyden and Hatch state, “…comprehensive tax reform is our ultimate objective, and we are committed to using these hearings as the building blocks to that goal.” In addition to tax reform, the Senators have also committed to continue to seek innovative ways to address the exhausted Highway Trust Fund.
