Last week, the Florida Cabinet approved the sale of approximately $27 million in surplus property, the proceeds of which will be used by Florida Forever, its conservation land-buying program.   The surplus property includes four closed prisons in Broward, Hendry, Hillsborough and Palm Beach counties.

The 2014-15 budget approved by the Legislature authorizes the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to sell up to $40 million of surplus property in order to purchase conservation land.  This latest sale comes one year after the DEP abandoned a process of identifying existing conservation lands of low value to purchase conservation land of higher value.
