EPA's Brownfields Area-wide Pilot Program

Register for the NALGEP Brownfield Communities Network webinar today and gain valuable information about the recently announced grant guidelines and Request for Proposals for the FY2013 Brownfields Area-Wide Planning Program. According to EPA, "these grants may be used by communities to facilitate community involvement in developing an area-wide plan for brownfields assessment, cleanup and subsequent reuse on a catalyst site and other high-priority brownfield sites." Grants will be funded up to $200,000 for two years. The application deadline is November 30, 2012.

Sanibel to host fertilizer legislation workshop

On October 29th at 1:00 p.m. and October 30th at 5:00 p.m., the City of Sanibel will be conducting training workshops at Sanibel City Hall, 800 Dunlop Road. In response to reports indicating that the legislature will again seek to preempt local government regulation of fertilizer, this goal of this workshop is to train "Area Captains" who will be responsible for coordinating with individuals willing to write to their legislators in opposition of harmful fertilizer legislation.

National Association of State Departments of Agriculture asks EPA to Approve Florida's NNC Rule

Citing the unilateral decision to impose numeric nutrient criteria in Florida and the federal lawsuit seeking similar action in the Mississippi River Basin, the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) recently sent a letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson asking for EPA's prompt approval of Florida's standards and the withdrawal of the EPA's controversial federal standards.

Long Range Program Plan for the State Courts System: FY13-14-FY17-18

The Florida Supreme Court released its strategic plan establishing the long-term focus of the Judicial Branch States Court System and outlining strategies to address issues evolving from past events and trends. The Long Range Program Plan provides context for how the branch will organize, provide services, and fund activities for FY13-14 through FY17-18.

This week, FAC's Communication Director Cragin Mosteller traveled to around Florida to speak against Amendment 4. Ms. Mosteller presented to the Charlotte County Board of County Commissioners, Charlotte Sun editorial editor, Palm Beach community meetings and the Punta Gorda, Ft. Lauderdale, Boca Raton and Citrus County Chambers of Commerce. On Saturday, Mosteller travels to Orlando to speak at the AFSCME conference.

Watching TaxWatch: 2010 TaxWatch Report Contradicts 2012 TaxWatch Report

Which TaxWatch report do you believe? That's the question being asked by the opponents of Amendment 4, who point to a 2010 report in Florida TaxWatch concluding that Amendment 4-style assessment caps result in "fewer jobs" and are an "impediment to a vibrant economy." This may come as a surprise to some, since Amendment 4 backers often tout a 2012 report from the very same Florida TaxWatch as reason to support Amendment 4.
