Juvenile Justice Bill passes out of House committee

The Blueprint Commission work shopped their recommendations in the House Juvenile Justice Committee and Senate Criminal Justice Committee. HB 273 by Rep. Adams (Orange – R), which extends the period of time juveniles who have allegedly committed an offense can be held in detention awaiting trial, passed out of House Safety and Security Council by a vote of 12 Yeas and 3 Nays (Rep. Thurston, Rep. Taylor, and Rep. Sachs). FAC is opposed to HB 273 in its current form because of the aforementioned provision. Rep. Adam’s did offer an amendment that limited this extension to only violent offenders. FAC appreciates this positive step in the right direction, but continues to oppose any change to this section towards an extension of stay.
