Florida Local Government Climate Protection Summit March 27, 2008

In the past year, initiative to address climate change has spread throughout the State of Florida at an unprecedented rate. Along with the Governor’s Executive Orders, many local governments throughout the State have begun taking powerful action on this complex issue. In recognition of this growing momentum, ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability in partnership with Leon County will host a meeting of Florida local governments interested in advancing climate and energy policy within their municipal operations and throughout their communities. The event will be held in partnership with Leon County on Thursday, March 27th, 2008 following the legislative days of the Florida Association of Counties and the Florida League of Cities.

County, city, and town government elected officials and staff from throughout the state are encouraged to attend. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet and learn about what other local governments are doing, or considering, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and conserve energy. Participants will receive training from ICLEI staff on how to measure local greenhouse gas emissions, create effective emission reduction plans, and develop internal staffing to meet the challenge. Participants will learn about the full set of climate protection tools that ICLEI provides to county, city and town governments nationwide. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn more about what the State of Florida is doing to address climate change, and how local governments can be involved, and may be implicated in emerging State policies and programs.

The day will close with a discussion around opportunities for further collaboration through the establishment of a formal network of Florida local governments working towards climate protection. ICLEI will present resources for facilitating such a network, and will describe how this has been accomplished in other states. Click here for more information.
