Mining Update
August 10, 2007
The District Court for the Southern District of Florida recently shut down certain mines in the Miami-Dade Lake Belt area. Because these mines are a significant source of construction aggregate materials for building roads, the Department of Transportation has expressed concerns regarding the increasing cost of construction materials. Environmentalists have expressed concerns regarding increased pressure to expand mining in other areas of the state, particularly in Southwest Florida. If you are interested in reading the full opinion, please see the following link to the Army Corp website: www.lakebeltseis.com. To help you wade through the lengthy opinion, the court addresses economic impact on the following pages: pp. 12-14, 22, 132-143, 146-148, 154-158, 165-166, and 175-176. The Strategic Aggregates Review Task Force is tentatively scheduled to have its first meeting on September 6 and 7 in Orlando. Commissioner Jeff Koons from Palm Beach County has been appointed by Senate President Ken Pruitt to represent urban counties on the task force. Appointments for small and mid-size county elected officials have not yet been completed. FAC will provide more information as it becomes available.
