Located approximately 55 miles north of Tampa on the Gulf of Mexico, Hernando County has a variety of venues and lifestyles. You can live in an historic home or a gated community. Some have referred to it as “country living” in Florida. The County is part of the Florida’s Nature Coast and includes beaches, the Withlacoochee State Forest, part of the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge and the iconic Weeki Wachee Springs. Outdoor activities abound including hiking nature trails, kayaking local rivers and waterways, scuba diving, fishing, frolicking in a spring fed water park, taking an endangered manatee tour and, of course, hanging out at the beach. The local economy is varied and includes a Walmart Distribution Center, assorted retail establishments, health care, rock mining, dining and accommodations.

The County government operates under the guidance of an elected five-member Board. Each member serves a four-year term and the terms are staggered with elections in November of even numbered years. The Board appoints a County Administrator who is responsible for the day-to-day operations of county government. 1,297 employees work for the County, 658 of which work under the direction of the in the various departments under the Board of County Commissioners. The remaining 639 work for the Sheriff (522 of the employees), Clerk of Circuit Court, Property Appraiser, Tax Collector and Supervisor of Elections. The general fund budget for the Hernando County Government for FY 2011-12 is $99,525,437 and the total budget is $420,268,927.
