General Public Safety

The public safety of all Floridians is a priority for the Association, including issues such as automated traffic enforcement, county emergency radio systems and funding for local crime labs.

Emergency 911 Dispatch Training

In 2010, the Legislature increased standards to Emergency 911 operators after a horrific incident in Southwest Florida.  A victim died due to the inactivity of the Emergency 911 operator.  FAC supports increased standards that will ensure the safety of those in need of emergency services and would encourage the legislature to adopt standards that will allow for operators to take online courses.

Funding for Local Crime Laboratories
There are five local crime analysis laboratories administratively housed under the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The Department also has several laboratories throughout the state, but these local laboratories provide local law enforcement officers with timely analysis for their ongoing investigations. Counties contribute to the funding of these laboratories and also receive general revenue funds from the state. Funding from the state is at a crossroad – the Department recommended eliminating all state aid to local crime labs.  A cut of this magnitude would be harmful to Florida’s residents who have been victimized by crime.
