A New Water Resource Partnership
The Office of Agricultural Water Policy (OAWP), within the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, is charged with establishing Best Management Practices (BMPs) for Florida’s agricultural commodities. BMPs are a key component and example of the industry’s commitment to addressing agricultural non-point pollution and water conservation. OAWP works with agricultural groups, the University of Florida, federal and state agencies, and others, to develop manuals for BMP implementation.
Eight commodity-specific manuals are currently in place for Florida’s produce, container nurseries, cattle, and sod growers. In addition, OAWP expects to complete the equine manual this year, and continuously works to update existing materials. OAWP’s six field teams, along with three contractors, help growers apply BMPs and take advantage of BMP-related services and programs in their region. OAWP recognizes the interest that local government has in agriculture’s responsibility to help protect water resources through BMP implementation. Therefore, OAWP is reaching out to counties and municipalities to increase understanding of agriculture and the BMP program, as well as form partnerships between local governments and local farmers.
