    FAC Secures Sponsors for County Health Department

    -Sen Rich and Rep Taylor file bills to reinstate exemption from rate control-
    FAC staff has secured House and Senate sponsors for one of the Association’s legislative priorities. Senator Nan Rich and Representative Dwayne Taylor have filed bills to reinstate the exemption from rate control for County Health Departments. Imposing rate on CHDs has diminished their ability to meet the health needs of their communities. Rate significantly limits a County Health Department’s ability to create new positions when needed and appropriately compensate health care professionals.     Senate Committee discusses 75% recycling goal

    The Senate Environmental Preservation and Conservation Committee met to discuss the 75% recycling goal.  Senator Constantine made it clear that this is a priority for him and all the stakeholders, including local government, need to get to the table and figure out how to make this happen.

    Committee delays vote on inmate medical costs

    SB 218 appeared in the Senate Community Affairs Committee this week.  Sheriff Coats from Pinellas County spoke in support of the bill and touched on the magnitude of savings this legislation would bring to taxpayers.  The committee seemed supportive of the bill, until Senator Thrasher spoke in opposition of the bill.

    Juvenile costs out of control

    Talk to your delegation today about alternative cost savings measures
    Yesterday, the St. Petersburg Times published this article on Juvenile Detention.  It clearly illustrates the disparities between the state and county contribution for juvenile detention.  The 2008-09 per diem rates for counties is $280.  The state paid $122 for the same detention care.
