FAC establishes Deepwater Horizon Legal Task Force

Friday, July 23, 2010 FAC’s General Counsel Ginger Delegal has brought together county attorney’s from across the state to assist the FAC/FLC/FSBA Joint Task Force on Economic Recovery.  As the task force continues to help local governments recover from the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill legal issues continue to arise.  This task force will:

     Become a group of informed county attorneys on the issues facing Florida’s counties in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
     Develop recommended legal strategies to preserve, protect and compensate Florida’s counties for their losses and damages resulting from the oil spill and to evaluate others’ legal strategies as they are made known to the counties.
     Assist the Florida Association of Counties in developing public policy related to the oil spill and in responding to the various workgroups that have been created at the state level, including but not limited to the Economic Recovery Task Force created by the Governor; the workgroups created in the House of Representatives by Speaker Cretul; the Legal Advisory Council created by Attorney General McCollum and Governor Crist; and FAC’s own workgroups created to also assist these other groups.
     Research, analyze and develop long term recommendations for changes in the federal response to such disasters, including amendments to the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 and intermediary executive orders.
     Evaluate and recommend changes to the local government claims process.
