Governor Scott released his budget on Thursday, January 31, 2013, and FAC is pleased to announce that the Governor did not support DOC’s proposal to retain all inmates with a year or less on their sentences at the time of sentencing in county jails instead of sending them to state operated prisons.  FAC worked closely with the Florida Sheriffs Association since October to put together an estimated fiscal impact to the counties should such a shift take place, and the results were staggering – over $100,000,000 in additional costs just to house these inmates. In addition, some counties would have had to renovate or construct new facilities to absorb the increased population which would have placed the estimated fiscal near $200,000,000.  As it stands, this proposal does not appear to be going anywhere this year.
